FireWise Neighborhood Chipping Event - Oct. 12, 2009
- Twelve or more homeowners agree to participate in the effort.
- Home owners signup with the designated representative (Dick Hansen 598-6338 or Hansenrr@comcast.net) at least one-week prior to chipping (Oct. 5th).
- Home owners to attend a FireWise briefing or schedule an onsite review (unless homeowner has prior FireWise experience).
- Each Home owner cuts and piles woody limbs and branches according to “Pile Guidelines” prior to the Oct. 12th chipping date – guidelines are available if you are not familiar with the requirement.
- Home owners need not be adjacent neighbors because the Fire Dept. will perform chipping at predefined locations.
- The fire department’s chipping crew will only chip at addresses that have signed up by the Oct. 5th deadline.
- Chipping activity may take more than a day.

A free FireWise review of your home is available to all Mountain Shadows residents. Contact Andrew Notbohm, FireWise Program Coordinator @ 385-7281 or email anotbohm@springsgov.com to schedule your appointment. He will advise you on how you can protect your home and reduce your wildfire risk danger. You can check the wildfire hazard risk rating for your home, by street address, at csfd.Springsgov.com.
Wildfire mitigation is the reduction of natural vegetation in the area immediately around the home to protect structures from an approaching wildfire. Wildfire mitigation can also reduce the potential of a structure fire spreading to surrounding vegetation. The CSFD FireWise program recommends thirty feet of mitigation around the home, but not to extend beyond the property line.
An example of FireWise mitigation work can be seen on the East side of Flying W Ranch Road between Wilson Road and Rossmere Road. This work was performed by community volunteers and Boy Scouts working on their Eagle Scout award.
Please encourage your neighbors to participate and “Share the Responsibility”.
Thank you for you participation in this important activity.
